A father of two children has been jailed for the reason of child neglect.  Below is a detailed on why he was given such sentence.

The Magistrate’s Court at Awutu Bereku has passed a sentence of two weeks imprisonment and a fine of Ghc300 to a 46-year-old mason, called Nicholas Kofi Owusu, for not taking care of his two children.

He was charged with “failing to take care of his children”, the court urge that he serves extra two weeks in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

The Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Madam Naomi Kuntor, asked Nicholas Kofi Owusu (the father of two children) to pay  an amount of GH₵1,000 every month for the upkeep of his two children.

This final decision by the court was made after Madam Dorcas Kwakye the wife of Nicholas Kofi Owusu and the mother of the two children dragged him to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service for not taking care of his children.

According to Chief Inspector Charles Annobil, Nicholas Owusu and Dorcas Kwakye, each residents of Fetteh Kakraba in the Central Region, had been in marriage for 16 solid years with two children of 14 and 10 years respectively.

Chief Inspector Charles Annobil  further said, the couple had separated for five years and the husband had since not been doing his responsibilities as a father, not giving the children food, education, clothing, shelter, good health care and other necessities.

Eventually, Nicholas Owusu pleaded the court with an explanation and was convicted on his plea.
